Marae Booking – Toito Te Whenua Makaawhio
July 21 @ 8:00 am - July 23 @ 5:00 pm
Toitū te whenua – Makaawhio Studying our local taonga, Aotea, as a means of building Makaawhio capability and knowledge in Earth science alongside our own matauranga.
What? During the next 18 months, interested members of our rūnanga will have the opportunity to engage in mātauranga workshops and participate in interviews to gather traditional knowledge of our takiwā and our taonga. This will include landscape hīkoi, aotea fieldwork, study of the fault line and geology, and discussions with kaumātua and rangatahi regarding your feelings toward your taonga.
Who? This wananga is open to all members of our hapu, and we encourage whānau of all ages and backgrounds to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with your iwi and your takiwā.
Where? Te Tauraka Waka A Māui Marae – Bruce Bay, South Westland
How? Depending on the number of registrations, there will be vans heading to and from the marae from Hokitika. Additional transport will also run from other areas as required.
When? The kaupapa of this project will be split into a series of wananga, the first on July 21st – 23rd
This project aims to encourage rangatahi to get involved with your hapu and take part in a series of wananga that will be both rewarding and engaging. Come along to your marae and get to know other whānau members, and learn about our treasured taonga and traditional gathering practices. Those who would like to be involved need to lodge their interest with Susan Wallace, Tumuaki, before June 17. Transport assistance and travel coordination is available to those who are interested in participating in the project on an on-going basis.
